Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

Geological Engineering Department

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Department of Geology was firstly established in 1977 as a department of earth-science within the Basic Sciences Faculty in Çukurova University. The first students graduated from this department in 1981. Geology Departments in Turkey joined to the Engineering and Architecture Faculty with the Higher Education law in 1982. The medium of teaching is Turkish for both undergraduate and graduate programs. However, some optional courses are given in English to those who primarily enrolled to prep English school.

The followings laboratories are available in the department to support the courses and research activities: Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrography, Atomic absorption and X ray, Rock and soil mechanic, Thin Section and sample preparation, Sedimentology, Photogeology laboratories and Electron microscope room.

2. CURRICULUM

Department of Geological Engineering is a four year degree course providing modern education and training for both graduate and undergraduate students.

Undergraduate students have to complete all the requirements concerning the courses (four year), projects and summer trainings. Students fulfilling these requirements are given in Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering. During the first year, students follow the regular curriculum designed to provide an understanding of basic Sciences. With the second years courses the students are confronted with the basic subjects of modern geological engineering in a broad scale. The theoretically oriented lectures are supported by a practical work and laboratory applications. Students are required to undertake a 14 weeks course of applied field geology in the sixth semester in order to develop their skills as a field geologist. Students are also required to undertake two separate summer trainings; one of these trainings is Industrial (30 days long); the other one is a camp training (15 days). During the training the students will be accompanied by a supervisor. During the second semester of the fourth year each student works on a graduation project related to a special topic in any of the main fields of geological engineering. This work is defended before an examining committee.

The department consists of four main scientific divisions:

  • Applied Geology
  • General Geology
  • Mineralogy - Petrography
  • Ore Deposits Geochemistry

The purpose of the program offered by the department of Geological Engineering is two fold: (1) to provide a high quality of advanced education in the scientific, technical and professional fields, (2) to conduct applied research for development of the resources.
